Wear Preventive Characteristics of Lubricating Fluid (FourBall Method)1

1.1 This test method covers a procedure for making a
preliminary evaluation of the anti-wear properties of the fluid
lubricants in sliding contact by means of the Four-Ball Wear
Test Machine. Evaluation of lubricating grease using the same
the machine is detailed in Test Method D 2266.
1.2 The values stated in either inch-pound units or SI units
are to be regarded separately as standard. Within the test, the
inch-pound units are shown in brackets. The values stated in
each system are not exact equivalents, therefore each system
must be used independently of the other. Combining values of
the two systems may result in nonconformance with the
